Why do we celebrate International Women's Day?

International Women's Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8th, commemorates the remarkable achievements of women worldwide and advocates for gender equality.

International Women's Day (IWD) originated from early 20th-century labour movements. It began with the International Women's Conference in 1910 when Clara Zetkin proposed an annual day to champion women's rights globally. The first official IWD was celebrated on March 19, 1911, gaining traction in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Over time, it evolved into a global phenomenon, commemorating women's achievements and advocating for gender equality on March 8th each year.

This global observance is not just a celebration, but also aims to prompt action to break down barriers hindering women's progress. By amplifying women's voices and shedding light on both their accomplishments and challenges we are able to acknowledge the incredible progress made. With that, we know there is a long way to go before we see true gender equality.

Here are some easy ways to take action this International Women's Day to help further progress for women around the globe!
